1) Why did you choose interventional radiology?

I didn't know a radiologist was a physician until I was in medical school getting a lecture from a radiologist. I liked imaging. But I also liked working with kids and their families, and I liked procedures but not a surgeon's work schedule. Pediatric IR is the perfect fit for me.

2) Tell us about you!  What’s an interesting fact about you?

Oh - there are so many!

Here's one - I am in the US Army Reserves.

3) Were you considering any other specialty?

Yes. When I decided to go to medical school, I was planning on going into pediatrics. I chose to pursue a career in medicine after I had my first child who was 11 weeks premature. I was very impressed with what the doctors and nurses could do for the tiny babies in their care, and I wanted to be part of that.

4) The stereotype behind radiologists is that they’re introverted and enjoy sitting in dark rooms.  Is that true or do you challenge the stereotype? :)

LOL!!! If you have ever met me, you will know that I am one of the MOST EXTROVERTED people you will ever meet. I tell people that on the personality trait score that I am 99.9% extrovert.

5) What’s the best part of your job?...

Working with children and their families, saving children from invasive surgeries, using cool technology, and, from a career perspective, feeling valued, respected, and appropriately compensated.

6) … What’s the worst?

Placing nasojejunal tubes! There’s a thorn on every rose! I dislike this specific procedure because we do it without sedation. It involves placing a feeding tube down the nose, through the stomach and esophagus, and into the small bowel. I don't like to cause any discomfort for my patients, and we typically sedate for most procedures in kids, but not for NJs.

7) Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully still very involved in clinical care. But I am finishing up my MBA, so....

8) Where do you see the field of radiology going in 10 years?

More use of technology tools, including AI and other advancement.

9) Weirdest/favorite/most memorable case?

That's a tough one. I think using tried and true techniques in an inventive and creative are most memorable. For example, ultrasound guided thrombin injection for post-traumatic pseudoaneurysms. I've done 4 of these in kids - one in the spleen, one in the leg, and two in the pelvis.

10) Any last words of advice? :)

Figure out what you love to do! There is no perfect job, but you want to find a good fit and something you can be passionate about.
